Starting with a size 4 hook, we have scaled down the popular Redfish Cracklin to have less weight, less profile, less flash, and made for picky fish in skinny water. A subtle amount of color in the legs and body provides just enough eye-catching ability, while the natural tones in the tail and collar make this fly extra shrimpy. It’s a perfect fly to tie on when you’re targeting that Gator Trout up on the flats, but also want a fly that works well for Redfish.

If you spend a lot of time sight casting on the Gulf Coast’s shallow flats and backwater marshes, you will undoubtedly run across plenty of Sheepshead. That’s why Port O’Connor fishing guide, Captain Scott Null, set out to find an effective fly that would increase the odds of hooking up with these elusive fish. This fly excels because of how the the rabbit fur "breathes" in the water with even the slightest movement. An extra-small lead eye gives the fly just enough weight to get it to the bottom, yet light enough to land quiet and not scare off skittish fish. And even though this fly is designed to sight cast to Sheepshead, it works very well for Redfish and Black Drum too. You can read more about how Capt. But generally speaking, get it in the path of a Sheepshead just close enough to get his attention and then let it sit on bottom until it finds it. As it approaches give it the smallest movement possible and be ready to set the hook on the slightest of tugs.

This is the original, bunny strip Toad designed by Gary Merriman (Fish Hawk, Atlanta). After several years, the only difference is minor: today's Toad is generally tied and fished slightly smaller than originally designed. And yes the rabbit strip is correct, tied skin–side up. Tarpon see the strip from below the fly. The Toad Too has the marabou tail. One of the two versions (bunny or marabou) is the very fly shown in the mouths of all tarpon in every magazine ad and has been the winning fly (especially when fished by Andy Mill) in more tournaments and is well known by every guide in tarpon–land. It is the hottest pattern of all time for tarpon in the Keys and beyond.

In the early 1980's permit were targeted with crab flies using round foam or epoxy bodies. By the mid 1980's the late Del Brown and Captain Steve Huff designed the revolutionary Merkin crab which called for Aunt Lydia's Sparkle Yarn tied perpendicular on the shank, #1 or 1/0 hooks and large lead barbell eyes. The yarn was trimmed to a trapezoid which reduced casting flutter and greatly improved the sink rate. Sandy Moret soon found that the jumbo bonefish of the Keys were fools for the same pattern by scaling down to #4, and switching the rubber legs from solid white with red tips to creamed colored rubber barred legs. Scores of bonefish over 12 pounds fell for this revision as did well over 100 permit on the larger versions. As Aunt Lydia's Sparkle Yarn became difficult to obtain, Sculpting Fiber has proved to be an excellent replacement.
