Umpqua - Clouser Minnow

I can't imagine an angler who hasn't fished a Clouser Minnow. The original designed by Bob Clouser has its roots in freshwater. Originating in Pennsylvania as a smallmouth bass pattern today this highly effective bait fish pattern has traveled the globe. It has been dressed in many outfits since its buck tail beginnings.

Umpqua - Improved Merkin

In the early 1980's permit were targeted with crab flies using round foam or epoxy bodies. By the mid 1980's the late Del Brown and Captain Steve Huff designed the revolutionary Merkin crab which called for Aunt Lydia's Sparkle Yarn tied perpendicular on the shank, #1 or 1/0 hooks and large lead barbell eyes. The yarn was trimmed to a trapezoid which reduced casting flutter and greatly improved the sink rate. Sandy Moret soon found that the jumbo bonefish of the Keys were fools for the same pattern by scaling down to #4, and switching the rubber legs from solid white with red tips to creamed colored rubber barred legs. Scores of bonefish over 12 pounds fell for this revision as did well over 100 permit on the larger versions. As Aunt Lydia's Sparkle Yarn became difficult to obtain, Sculpting Fiber has proved to be an excellent replacement. The Improved Merkin is a much welcomed addition to our growing inventory of innovative patterns. And who better to be in charge of the quality of these flies than our fly specialist himself? "Dave Student always tied thousands of the finest Merkins I had ever seen for over 20 years!" -Sandy Moret

Umpqua - Punisher Tarpon Chicone 2/0

"Similar to many of its predecessors, like the SeaDucer and DT Special, it’s tied extremely sparse with just a few materials. The difference is that this bug is entirely synthetic—no wrestling hard to manage feathers that tend to twist or spin on the shank. The palmered brushes give this pattern a cylindrical shape that moves a significant amount of water for a minuscule fly. Its bushy body also keeps the fly from plummeting to the bottom and imparts it with a lifelike swimming motion without much forward movement. My Punisher series of flies are the epitome of “guide flies”: quick, simple, and effective!"

A Jan Isley original. This is one of the first crab patterns to upgrade from the original Merkin. Designed on the flats of the Yucatan for permit, in smaller sizes it has proven to be very effective for bonefish as well. Don't limit yourself to Mexico with this one as it can be a game changer in Belize and flats all over the world.
